Spitfire P8642 at Catterick airfield.

At the end of a training exercise at 10.45hrs on 11th November 1941 this 145 Squadron aircraft made an approach to land at Catterick airfield in bad visibility but the approach too high. The pilot attempted to sideslip to lose height but pulled out too late and hit the ground with the undercarriage. The landing was too heavy for the undercarriage and it collapsed.

Douglas Jones had already crashed Spitfire P7983 at Marston Moor on 25th October 1941. He was killed on 9th January 1944 while flying 17 Squadron P-40N Warhawk NZ3123 in the South Pacific. He is commemorated on the Bourail Memorial, New Zealand.
