Spitfire P7838 at Scorton airfield.
During the late afternoon of 28th November 1941 this 122 Squadron aircraft was flown on a dusk circuits and landing exercise. During one landing at Scorton at 17.45hrs the aircraft swung off runway, the pilot was not able to correct the swing, it ran into soft ground and possibly overturned when he attempted to get the aircraft back onto the runway. It certainly suffered Cat.R repairable damage. It may well be the undercarriage just collapsed, the AM Form 1180 does not say this happened though.
Pilot - Sgt Reginald Henry William Harris RAFVR (1255581).
F/O Regonald Harris was killed on 23rd August 1943 when 1676 Target Towing Flight aircraft Spitfire JK515 was ditched off Gibraltar. He is commemorated on the Malta Memorial.
