Spitfire P7624 at Catterick airfield.

On 24th July 1941 this 41 Squadron aircraft overshot on landing at Catterick and hit a gun emplacement at 18.35hrs. It was later repaired but was destroyed later in the year in a fatal crash near Catterick.

Pilot - Sgt Denys George Smallbone RAFVR (1253160).


Denys Smallbone later received a commission (171380) and flew with 118 Squadron in 1945 (when the photograph of him was taken). Post-War he acted as an acted as an instructor for the CFS before leaving the RAF as F/Lt. He emmigrated to Australia and lived in Port Alvert, Gippsland and joined the Church, becoming Rev.Smallbone in the Anglican Church.


Spitfire P7624 was built to contract B.981687/39 by Vickers Armstrong's Ltd. at Castle Bromwich and was delivered to 37 MU at Burtonwood on 11th November 1940. Eight days later it was taken on charge by 41 Squadron at Hornchurch, on 23rd February 1941 it moved with the unit to Catterick and as a result of this mishap on 24th July 1941 Cat.A/FA damage was as bad as the damage got (The AM1180 has Cat.M(c) damage). It was repaired on site and was taken on charge by 145 Squadron when they arrived at Catterick. On 4th November 1941 Cat.E2/FA damage was recorded on the paperwork following a fatal crash at Killerby near Catterick. It was struck off charge on 9th November 1941.
