Hampden P1245 at Finningley airfield.
On 9th May 1941 this 25 Operational Training Unit aircraft was returning from night cross country training exercise when, at 04.10hrs, as the aircraft making a final approach
to land at Finningley it stalled onto the runway from fifteen feet and was damaged.
Pilot - Sgt Ernest Sumner Clarke RAF (758141).
Hampden P1245 was built to contract 773239/38 by Handley Page Ltd. at Radlett and was awaiting collection in October 1939. It was received by 8 MU on 19th October 1939 and after a lengthy period of MU storage it was taken on charge by 25 O.T.U. at Finningley on 27th March 1941 shortly after the unit formed. As a result of the accident on 9th May 1941 Cat.Ac/FA damage appears to have been the initial damage assessment made by No.43 Group D.A. On 25th May 1941 the aircraft was transported to the LMS Carriage Works in Derby which must have been for a repair in works to be carried out. A second damage assessment of Re-Cat.B/FA damage may have made for this to happen. The next entry on the aircraft's AM Form 78 is a transfer to 455 Squadron and is listed before it received Cat.B/FA damage on 16th January 1942. It was transported to Tollerton for a repair in works on 4th February 1942. On 9th March 1942 it was flown to 44 MU but on 24th April 1942 it was flown to English Electric for modifications. This was probably when the aircraft was converted to TB.1 status. On 15th May 1942 it was taken on charge by 455 Squadron at Leuchars but on 12th October 1942 it was flown to Russia and handed over to Russian Navy and after this date nothing more of the aircraft's history is known.
