Tiger Moth N9318 at or near Brough airfield.
On 23rd March 1941 this No.4 EFTS aircraft sunk into the ground at or near Brough airfield while it was being flown on a training flight in the Brough area. The pilot left it too late in applying power to the engine and when he did the throttle was opened too quickly so did not pick up speed properly. The aircraft sustained minor damage which was repaired on site at Brough.
Pilot (Instructor?) - P/O Smith.
Pupil Pilot - Name unknown.
Tiger Moth N9318 was built to contract 778402/38 by The De Havilland Aircraft Co Ltd. at Hatfield and was awaiting collection in October 1939. After a lengthy period of storage it was taken on charge by 4 EFTS at Brough though the date for this is not known. There is no mention of the accident on 23rd March 1941 in the publiched history of the aircraft but it was probably repaired on site at Brough and returned to 4 E.F.T.S. afterwards. It was placed into MU storage before 10th March 1947 and was struck off RAF charge on 9th March 1950.
