Tiger Moth N9317 near Faxfleet, Brough.

On 15th April 1941 the trainee pilot of this aircraft was attempting to loop the aircraft while flying at around a thousand feet above the ground. The aircraft did not regain a level attitude after making the loop and continued to fly inverted at around 200 feet above the ground. It was thought that the pilot had allowed the aircraft to roll inverted. Having lost control he attempted to bale out but was killed.

Pilot - LAC Edwin George Bezant RAFVR (1263106), aged 27, of Newport. Buried Newport (St.Woolos) Cemetery, Monmouthshire.


Tiger Moth N9317 was built to contract 778402/38 by The De Havilland Aircraft Co Ltd. at Hatfield and was awaiting collection in October 1939. After a lengthy period of storage it was taken on charge by 4 EFTS at Brough though the date for this is not known. As a result of the incident near Brough on 15th April 1941 Cat.E2/FA damage was recorded and the aircraft written off.
