Tiger Moth N9149 at Brough airfield.

On 26th February 1941 this aircraft overturned on landing, almost certainly at the 4 E.F.T.S. home airfield at Brough. The pilot escaped injury.

Pilot - LAC Leonard George Weller RAFVR (1376022).


Leonard Weller was later taken off pilot training and underwent wireless operator training. He received a commission on 21st February 1943 but was killed flying with 617 Squadron on 15th May 1943 when Lancaster ED865 crashed in Holland on the famous Dams Raid. His life is therefore exceptionally well documented on the internet. He is buried at Bergen Op Zoom War Cemetery.
Tiger Moth N9149 was built to contract 778402/38 by The de Havilland Aircraft Co. Ltd., at Hatfield and was awaiting collection in July 1939. It was initially placed into long term MU storage until 1st March 1940 when it was taken on charge by 6 C.P.F. at St.Eval. This unit disbanded on 27th May 1940 and it was transferred to 4 E.F.T.S. at Brough where it served it's full life. There is no mention of the incident on 26th February 1941 in the published history of the aircraft, after the minor damage it was almost certainly repaired on site at Brough and continued to serve there. Prior to 10th March 1947 it had been placed in long term MU storage pending disposal. On 29th March 1951 it was sold by the RAF and after this no further history of the aircraft has been found.
