Tiger Moth N6744 at Brough airfield.

On 21st April 1941 this 4 E.F.T.S. aircraft was involved in a collision on the ground with another aircraft of the same unit. The pilot of this aircraft sustained minor injuries. The AIR81 file in the National Archives states that the aircraft was Tiger Moth N8744 but this serial was never allotted to a Tiger Moth so N6744 is the closest fit Graham Sharpe and I can find but the damage is not listed in it's published Air Britain history so I have not been able to 100% prove it as yet.

Pilot - LAC Leslie William Lowther RAFVR (1381150). Minor head injuries.

Leslie Lowther received a commission in January 1942. He survived the war, was awarded the DFC and served in the RAF until the 1950s.
Tiger Moth N6744 was built to contract 778402/38 by the De Havilland Aircraft Company Ltd, at Hatfield and was awaiting collection in March 1939. It was taken on charge shortly afterward by 12 E. & R.F.T.S. at Prestwick ( where it was operated by Scottish Aviation Ltd). On 3rd September 1939 this unit was re-designated 12 E.F.T.S. and still used Prestwick as their airfield. 12 E.F.T.S. disbanded on 22nd March 1941 but the aircraft could have already been transferred to 4 E.F.T.S. at Brough by that date as no transfer date is currently known when this page was created. If indeed N6744 was the aircraft damaged at brough on 21st April 1941 then minor Cat.A/FA damage was the likely damage assessment resulting in a repair on site. The aircraft was later transferred to 13 Squadron at Odiham in late 1941 for use as a 'hack' aircraft but no precise date is known. On 1st August 1942 the aircraft moved with this unit to MacMerry but was then placed in MU storage on 10th November 1942 when the unit moved to the Middle East. The aircraft next appears on charge with 6 E.F.T.S. at Sywell in 1943 but found its way back to long term MU storage pending disposal. It was struck off RAF charge on 15th May 1946 when it was recorded 'sold'. It was registered on the UK civilian register as G-AHYS to Airwork Ltd on 17th July 1946 but was sold overseas on 1st November 1946 and registered as PH-AUV in The Netherlands on 26th March 1947 to the Rijksluchtvaartschool. On 1st October 1949 it was re-registered in the Dutch 3e Register. On 15th March 1951 it was damaged in hangar-tent at Ypenburg during a storm. Following repair it was force landed on 1st November 1951 at Ypenburg and was damaged. It was repaired and then force landed again on 28th January 1955 at Hilversum and damaged. It was again repaired and damaged again following a collision in the air on 13th June 1957 and an emergency-landing was made near Lopik. It was again repaired. On 21st July 1960 it was registered to Nationale Luchtvaart School but was listed as scrapped on 9th March 1965.
