Wellington N2801 at Finningley airfield.

On 12th June 1941 this 25 O.T.U. Wellington was parked at Finningley airfield when it was struck by a landing Wellington R1709. The wing tip of Wellington R1709 clipped the front turret of Wellington N2801 but this caused N2801 to swing around and the wing of it struck the cockpit of R1709 causing injuries to the two pilots in R1709.

No crew.

Wellington N2801 was built to contract 992424/39 by Vickers Armstrong's Ltd. and was awaiting collection in July 1940. It was received by 48 MU on 29th July 1940 and was initially placed in long term MU storage. It was taken on charge by 25 O.T.U. at Finningley on 6th March 1941 shortly after the unit formed five days earlier. As a result of the damage sustained at Finningley on 12th June 1941 minor Cat.A/FA damage was probably the damage assessment. The aircraft's AM Form 78 does not fully record the damage but does have some form of flying accident damage listed as Cat.Ac/FA and then being cancelled. I assume that the damage was deemed to be less that Cat.Ac and was Cat.A with it being repaired locally on site by ground crew. The aircraft was taken on charge by 26 O.T.U. at Wing on 30th September 1942. On 14th May 1943 it was transferred to 11 O.T.U. at Westcott and sustained minor Cat.Ac/FA damage in a flying accident on 25th June 1943. Following a repair on site it was returned to 11 OTU in September 1943 but was deemed as Cat.B damaged during a major inspection in early 1944. From here it was taken to Sywell for repair. It was servicable in September 1944 but remained in store with 8 M.U. until being struck off charge on 6th May 1946.
