Whitley N1466 at Linton on Ouse airfield.
During the early hours of 5th March 1941 this No.2 Beam Approach Training Flight aircraft was used on a blind approach training flight with a pilot and an instructor. While taxying after landing at Linton on Ouse at 02.25hrs the aircraft ran over a patch of soft ground causing the undercarriage to sink. More power was applied to the engines to free the aircraft but this resulted in the undercarriage collapsing. The soft area of the airfield had been caused when an aircraft had previously crashed there with a bomb load that had exploded. The craters had been filled in but rather quickly. The winter of heavy rain and snow with river flooding locally had caused the back-filled craters to subside.
