Halifax L9522 at Linton on Ouse airfield.

At 14.15hrs on 16th June 1941 this 35 Squadron aircraft skidded on landing at Linton on Ouse at 14.15hrs resulting in the port undercarriage collapsing following an uncontrolled swing off the runway. The aircraft must have been landing following a non-operational flight though three Halifaxes did bomb Cologne on the night of 16th / 17th June 1941 and it could well be been an airtest with the plan to use the aircraft on Ops that night.

Pilot - F/O Peter Langmead RAFVR (86629).

Peter Langmead received a commission to the rank of P/O on probation on 7th September 1940 and was later promoted to F/O on 7th September 1941 and to F/Lt a year later. He and his crew were flying Halifax L9502 on Ops on 7th / 8th July 1941 and they became PoWs.
Halifax L9522 was built to contract 692649/37 by Handley Page Ltd. at Radlett and was awaiting collection on 10th March 1941. It was allotted to 35 Squadron on 26th April 1941 and after flight testing it was taken on charge by 35 Squadron at Linton on Ouse on 3rd May 1941. As a result of the incident on 16th June 1941 minor Cat.Ac/FA damage was the damage assessment that saw the aircraft repaired on site. This repair apepars to have taken some months. The aircraft's AM Form 78 states that it was not returned to 35 Squadron charge until 3rd November 1941. It was then immediately transferred to 28 Conversion Flight at Leconfield on 9th November 1941. On 22th December 1941 it crashed when en route from Leconfield to Radlett in bad weather near Knipton, Lincolnshire with the then crew of eight being killed. Cat.E/FA damage was recorded on the aircraft's paperwork after assessment. It was struck off charge on 1st January 1942.
