Halifax L9494 (possibly) at Linton on Ouse airfield.

The AM Form 78 for Halifax L9494 states that it received damage through enemy action on 11th March 1941 to Cat.Ac status, possibly while it was on the ground. The aircraft was on the books with 35 Squadron at the time, it was not flown operationally on this night and the unit orb does not mention any enemy raid over the airfield. More details are required.

The damage may have been entered in error on the wrong AM Form 78 as Halifax L9493 was damaged by flak on Ops on this night. Also, the date is not perfectly clear. While it appears to show 11th March 1941 it may be 11th May 1941 and if so then Linton on Ouse airfield was attacked by enemy aircraft that night so that would fit.

Halifax L9494 was built by Handley Page and was allotted to 8 MU on 11th December 1940. It was received by 8 MU on 1st February 1941 and was later taken on charge by 35 Squadron at Linton on Ouse on 28th February 1941. It never flew operationally with 35 Squadron. Having sustained Cat.Ac damage through enemy action on what appears to have been 11th March 1941 it was assessed by 43 Group D.A. and was repaired on site. The aircraft was transferred to 76 Squadron on 20th June 1941. On 24th July 1941 it failed to return from an operational flight to La Pallice, being ditched off the French coast after flak and enemy aircraft damage. The crew survived but became PoWs. The aircraft was struck off charge the following day and it had clocked up a total of just over 40 hours flying time from new.
