Blenheim L8668 at Rolston, Hornsea.

On 30th March 1941 the pilot of this 2 (C)OTU aircraft was flying in the Hornsea area when it clipped trees at Rolston, just south of Hornsea, the aircraft then struck farm buildings at Coney Garth Farm and exploded killing the pilot instantly. The investigation that resulted found the pilot had been low flying over some friends who owned a tennis court where he had regularly played.

Pilot - P/O Robert Basil Weber RAFVR (89372), aged 21, of St.Andrews, Bristol. Cremated Hull, Yorkshire.


Robert Weber received his commission on 21st December 1940 (with seniority back dated to 24th November 1940) to the rank of P/O on probation. H e is commemorated on a memorial wall in Hull Northern Cemetery.


Blenheim L8668 was built to contract 551920/37 by Rootes Securities Ltd. at Speke and was awaiting collection in June 1939. After a very lengthy period of MU storage it was taken on charge by 2 (C)OTU at Catfoss on 1st October 1940, when the unit formed. Cat.E2/FA damage was recorded following the accident near Hornsea in March 1941.
