Blenheim L1320 at Church Fenton airfield.

On the night of 24th / 25th April 1941 an enemy aircraft was operating in the Church Fenton area, two 54 Operational Training Unit aircraft waiting to take off from Church Fenton were badly damaged on the ground when the enemy aircraft dropped some bombs on the airfield at 00.08hrs. Three other aircraft were slightly damaged by the bombing. L1320 was probably one of the ones damaged on the ground.

Pilot (if any) - Name unknown.

Blenheim L1320 was built to contract 527114/36 as a bomber version by The Bristol Aeroplane Company Ltd. at Filton and was awaiting collection in September 1938, the following month it was taken on charge by 144 Squadron at Hemswell. In March 1939 144 Squadron ceased operating Blenheim MkI's so the aircraft was flown into MU for conversion to MkIf status and storage. In November 1939 it was taken on charge by 141 Squadron at Grangemouth then in May 1940 it transferred to 23 Squadron at Colleyweston. It moved to Ford with the unit on 12th September 1940 but within days it was placed into MU storage. 54 OTU based at Church Fenton took the aircraft on charge in December 1940 and as a result of the enemy action in April 1941 Cat.A/FB damage was recorded. The aircraft was repaired on site and on completion of repair it was transferred to the newly formed 60 OTU at Leconfield by the end of May 1941. It was flown to East Fortune when the unit moved there on 4th June 1941 but on 16th June 1941 it was placed into MU store, probably at East Fortune when 60 OTU ceased operating Blenheim MkIf's. In October 1941 it was taken on charge by 60 OTU at East Fortune when the unit re-commenced twin engine training but on 24th November 1942 all 60 OTU Blenheims passed to the newly formed 132 (C)OTU at East Fortune. In February 1943 it was converted to ground instructional airframe 3537M and after this nothing more of the aircraft is known.
