Hampden AD743 at Finningley airfield.

On 16th June 1941 this 25 Operational Training Unit aircraft landed at Finningley at 12.20hrs on return from a training flight. Unfortunately the pilot had left the brakes on and one was on more that the other, this resulted in a swing developing. The undercarriage then collapsed. It was the pilot's second similar mishap.

Hampden AD743 was built to contract B.67577/40 by English Electric Co.Ltd. at Samlesbury. It was allotted to 24 MU on 17th December 1940 and was received by them on 28th December 1940. After a short period of MU storage it was taken on charge in by 106 Squadron at Finningley on 13th January 1941. On 4th February 1941 it was passed to No.5 Group Target Towing Flight at Finningley. On 6th March 1941 it sustained Cat.Ac/FA damage in a flying accident though no details are yet known about the incident. Once repaired it was taken on charge by 25 O.T.U. at Finningley on 5th April 1941 and on 16th June 1941 it sustained Cat.B/FA as a result of the mishap at Finningley. It was transported to A.S.T.Ltd. for repair where a decision was made to convert the aircraft to TB.1 status, this was completed in April 1942. On 13th May 1942 it was taken on charge by 455 Squadron at Leuchars and it served at Leuchars until September 1942 when it was flown out to Russia for use with the Russian Navy. After being left in Russia on 20th Novemebr 1943 this nothing more about the aircraft is known.
