Unidentified Wellington at Pocklington airfield?
On 1st December 1941 this aircraft was landing at Pocklington airfield in poor visibility when it overshot the runway after the brakes failed. The aircraft was possibly returning
from an operational flight to Hamburg. The aircraft was slightly damaged and was probably repaired but the identity of the aircraft is not yet known.
I would link this incident to being that of Wellington W5564 of 405 Squadron that did exactly the same on this date but at Driffield airfield.
Crew - Names unknown.
On this date a 405 Squadron Wellington "LQ-E" was caught in searchlights and flak (possibly after bombing) which caused minor damage to the tailplane of the Wellington. After violent evasive action was taken the crew returned to base. It may well be the same aircraft that was damaged at Pocklington but sadly the squadron records do not go into further details.
Pilot - Sgt Taylor
Sgt Morris
