Magister R2395 at Catfoss airfield.

On 13th June 1940 a minor accident occurred at Catfoss airfield involving this aircraft which was a visiting 219 Squadron aircraft. A member of airfield staff of No.5 Group Target Towing Flight who was based at Waddington but on attachment to Catfoss receiving arm injuries resulting hospital treatment. I speculate he was struck by a rotating propeller.

Ground Crew - AC2 John Ernest Lynn-Battle RAF (972236). Slightly injured.

Magister R2395 was delivered to 19 MU at St.Athan on 4th April 1939 and remained in store until being taken on charge by 219 Squadron at Catterick on 6th November 1939. As a result of this ground accident on 13th June 1940 nominal Cat.U damage would have probably been the damage assessment with a new propeller probably being as serious as the damage got. It was written off a few weeks later on 6th August 1941 in a serious crash near Piercebridge, a few miles west of Darlington when it clipped high tension wires placed across the River Tees and crashed close by (believed to have been on the Durham side of the border). The aircraft was eventually struck off charge on 16th August 1940 when the paperwork caught up.
