Hurricane L3470 at Church Fenton airfield.
On 21st July 1940 this 73 Squadron aircraft landed on a flooded / waterlogged part of Church Fenton airfield, the undercarriage collapsed and the aircraft tipped on its nose.
The pilot and aircraft had been flown over to Leconfield as a forward operating base to undertake patrols and had returned to Church Fenton, landing with two others at 18.30hrs.
Pilot - Sgt Ronald Vernon Ellis RAF (556445).
Ronald Ellis survived the Battle of Britain. He later flew in North Africa, he was awarded the DFM in 1942 and AFC in 1946. He died in 1988.
