Hurricane L2826 at Church Fenton airfield.

On 25th May 1940 this 87 Squadron aircraft made a belly landing at Church Fenton airfield owing to a technical issue with the controls. The squadron had left France just days earlier but was forced to leave most of its equpiment and personnel behind. It was working up to being operational again at the time of this incident.

Pilot - F/Lt Ian Richard Gleed RAF (37800).


Ian Gleed served in the Battle of Britain with 87 Squadron and was awarded the DFC with them, Gazetted in September 1940. He was awarded the DSO in May 1942 and was killed in Tunisia on 16th April 1943. His body is now buried at Enfidaville Cemetery.
