Whitley N1462 at Linton on Ouse airfield.

On 19th May 1940 this 58 Squadron aircraft was in the process of landing in gusty weather at Linton on Ouse airfield following a non-operational flight. The aircraft stalled just above the ground with the wheels and flaps down, the undercarriage then collapsed when it struck the ground. It sustained slight damage and it was soon repaired, the crew were not injured.

Pilot - Sgt Jack Bramwell Jones RAF (565170).

Crew - Names unknown.

Sgt Jack Jones and his then crew were killed in action when Whitley N1472 was hit by flak on ops to Paderborn on 22nd / 23rd July 1940 when it crashed near Detmold, Germany. He and his crew are buried in Hannover War Cemetery, he was twenty five years old.
Whitley N1462 was built to contract 75147/38 by Armstrong Whitworth Ltd at Baginton and was awaiting collection on 14th December 1939. It was firstly flown into MU storage before being issued to 58 Squadron at Linton on Ouse in March 1940. Following the incident detailed above Cat.M/FA damage was recorded and the aircraft repaired on site and returned to the squadron. It overshot on landing at Linton on Ouse on Christmas Eve 1940 on return from ops and was again slightly damaged and repaired on site. On 18th June 1941 Cat.W(m) damage was recorded after it failed to return from ops to Cologne after it was shot down by a night-fighter near Eindhoven. Four of the crew on that occasion were killed, the other became a PoW (ironically his name was Sgt J B Jones, but not the same man as the pilot of the aircraft when it sustained damage at Linton on Ouse).
