Airspeed Envoy L7270 at Finningley airfield.
On 11th July 1940 this 24 Squadron aircraft was slightly damaged at Finningley airfield when a wheel fell off on landing from a flight from Hendon to Finningley. This aircraft was used regular to fly King George VI up to the outbreak of the War when the armed Hudson was deemed more suitable.
Pilot - W/Co Evans-Evans.
Airspeed Envoy G-AEXX was built to contract 621351/37 by Airspeed (1934) Ltd. at Portsmouth and was first test flown on 25th March 1937. It was flown to RAF Martlesham on
25th April 1937 and it's Certificate of Airworthiness was issued on 6th May 1937 and it was given the military serial L7270 but this serial was not applied but it was taken on
charge by 24 Squadron at Hendon. On 26th May 1937 it was registered to the Air Ministry as G-AEXX at Hendon (King's Flight). The last record of it as being G-AEXX was on 26th
August 1939. The first record of it as being L7270 was on 30th October 1939 so it almost certainly took it's military serial in these weeks. It sustained the minor damage at
Finningley on 11th July 1940 where Cat.M/FA damage was likley to have been sustained though not recorded on its record card. It was probably repaired on site and continued
in its role with 24 Squadron. It was flown to P.S.I.O.W. for maintenance on 21st June 1942. (PSIOW - Porstmouth, Southsea & Isle of White Aviation Ltd, Portsmouth.). It was
then taken on charge by the Station Flight at Halton on 9th August 1942 and sustained Cat.B/FA damage on 11th August 1942 when it's undercarriage collapsed on landing at
Halton. From here it was dismantled and transported to P.S.I.O.W. for repair on 18th August 1942. It then went to 5 MU at Kemble on 16th November 1942 and was taken on
charge by the Station Flight at Defford though no date for this is recorded in it's record. It sustained Cat.B/FA when the undercarriage collapsed on landing at Defford
on 7th July 1943. It was dismantled and transported to P.S.I.O.W. again for repair on 24th July 1943. It passed to 5 MU at Kemble on 12th November 1943 and was issued to
Fairey Aviation Ltd, Stockport on 11th January 1944. Postwar it was purchased by C.W. Farquharson at Datchet and registered as G-AEXX to Gerald Guy Ward Farquharson on
11th February 1946 and was based at Hanworth.
It's registration was then cancelled on 19th June 1946 as it was sold to Sweden. It was then registered to N. Turing as SE-ASN at Visby, Sweden on 5th December 1946.
It later passed to Gosta Andree at Visby on 9th April 1954 but crashed on 6th July 1955. It's registration was cancelled on 2nd January 1959.
