Hampden L4185 at Finningley airfield.

On 29th November 1940 this 106 Squadron aircraft suffered a heavy landing at Finningley airfield while the pilot was carrying out a basic night circuits and landings exercise. An undercarriage leg collapsed and it received minor damage.

Hampden L4185 was built to contract 549267/36 by Handley Page Ltd. at Radlett and was awaiting collection in May 1940. It was allotted to 106 Squadron on 4th May 1939 and was taken on charge by them at Finningley on 24th May 1939. It was despatched to 32 MU on 5th January 1940 and returned to 106 Squadron five days later. On 29th November 1940 it suffered the landing accident at Finningley. Cat.R(b)/FA damage was the damage assessment although there is no mention of the incident on it's AM Form 78. A repair on site was done by a team from Handley Page and it was returned to 106 Squadron in early 1941. On 23rd February 1941 106 Squadron moved to Coningsby. On 17th May 1941 it was despatched to English Electric, Service Aircraft Section (S.A.S.) and then returned to 106 Squadron on 22nd May 1941. On 5th July 1941 it crashed on an operational flight to Dortmund. Cat.W/FB damage was recorded when it crashed at Half Acre Creek, River Medway, in the Thames Estuary killing it's then crew of four. The aircraft was struck off charge on 14th July 1941.
