Hampden L4164 damaged by enemy action, returned to Lindholme airfield.
On the evening of 14th September 1940 the crew of this 50 Squadron aircraft were detailed to bomb Ostend harbour and took off from Lindholme airfield at 20.40hrs. The crew were over the target at 22.06hrs and encountered anti-aircraft fire with searchlights. To escape the pilot descended the aircraft down to ground level and flew out to sea. The aircraft received one bullet hole damage to the tail which did not prevent the crew returning to Lindholme airfield and landing at 23.45hrs. The damage is mentioned in the squadron records, it must also be one of the three mentioned in the Lindholme station record book as receiving bullet hole damage to their tails. The identities of the other two are not known.
