Blenheim L1187 near Whenby, Sheriff Hutton.

On 1st July 1940 at around 00.30hrs a Blenheim is listed in a North Riding police report database as crash landing near Whenby Manor, Whenby. The pilot was uninjured and the aircraft was not badly damaged. The mention of this incident in these police reports is the only real clue that something happened here at Whenby. Church Fenton's ORB record that on this date"AC2 Wallace (SHQ) flew off without permission in Blenheim. Aircraft crashed at 00.15 hours." but this entry does not give the aircraft's serial number or does it suggest that it was with a specific numbered squadron. By this date No.4 Radio MU used Blenheim MkI & MkIV aircraft for radio calibration work, they were based at Church Fenton. It seems probable that the aircraft which crash landed at Whenby was one of theirs, although not 100% confirmed it is known that they used Blenheim L1187 from April 1940 for such work but whether they operated others is not yet known. L1187 was eventually transferred to 54 OTU when the unit formed at Church Fenton on 25th November 1940.
