Hart K6483 at Thornaby airfield.

On 26th June 1940 the pilot of this 608 Squadron aircraft was taxiing at Thornaby airfield when a tyre burst, the aircraft swung and a wing hit ground damaging the aircraft. It is assumed that this was a squadron "Hack" or run-out aircraft as the Hart was not a frontline aircraft used by 608 Squadron at the time. The aircraft was repaired.

Pilot - Name unknown.

Hart K6483 had being in use at Thornaby since 1936. It was built to contract 424074/35 by Armstrong Whitworth at Whitey Abbey and was delivered to 608 Squadron on 9th June 1936. In early August 1936 it was being flown on a training flight over Co.Durham when it suffered the engine failing flying at a height of around 2,000 feet. The pilot attempted to force land near Muggleswick, Co.Durham but it struck a hay stack and crashed upside down. Both the crew escaped serious injury. Cat.M/FA damage would have been the damage assessment which probably saw it transported back to Thornaby for repair. On 26th June 1940 it crashed at Thornaby and again Cat.M/FA damage was probably the damage assessment that saw it again repaired. It was transferred to Odiham on 27th September 1940 and shipped to the South African Air Force for 2 FTS on 12th October 1940. It was struck off RAF charge on 30th November 1944.
