At 09.00hrs on 3rd July 1940 three Spitfires of "Green Section", 616 Sqn were scrambled from Leconfield airfield to intercept approaching enemy aircraft. They encountered one Dornier Do17 flying at 4500ft off Withernsea and made a series of attacks on the aircraft leading to it being shot down into the North Sea. P/O Dundas's aircraft received three rounds of the enemy's returning fire in his port wing which broke the aileron cable during the combat. Moberley had ran out of ammunition so returned to base. Later another Dornier was encountered so Dundas and Burnard attacked this aircraft but it escaped into cloud though one engine was thought to be out of action. The Spitfires all returned safely to Leconfield and landed at around 09.20hrs. Dundas' aircraft was one that was certainly damaged but the Leconfield airfield station orb states two Spitfires were damaged. Who was flying the other is not known. The identities of the aircraft 616 Squadron flown on each flight during this period are not listed in their records so identifying any them is hard. No combat reports in the National Archives for this incident. The incident is recorded in more detail in Bill Norman's Broken Eagles book.
