Wellesley K8524 at Driffield aerodrome.

On 3rd October 1938 this 77 Squadron struck a compressor on landing at Driffield aerodrome. Minor damage to the aeroplane resulted.

Wellesley K8524 was built to contract 435442/35 by Vickers Ltd. at Weybridge and was taken on charge by 77 Squadron at Driffield as new on 13th November 1937. The mishap there on 3rd October 1938 saw a Cat.M/FA damage assessment and it was repaired on site. It resumed being used by 77 Squadron until 3rd June 1939 it was flown to Cunliffe Owen Aircraft at Eastleigh for modifications. On 25th October 1939 it passed to 36 M.U. (Packing Depot) at Sealand then on 22nd December 1939 it was shipped to the Middle East. It was taken on charge by 223 Squadron at Summit but the date is not known. On 29th July 1940 it sustained Cat.R/FB damage when it was attacked by a Fiat CR42 fighter near Massawa, Eritrea whilst on an operational flight and one of the crew was killed. The pilot was able to land safely but the aircraft appears never to have been repaired. On 29th January 1941 it was struck off charge with Re-Cat.W damage being the damage assessment. On 6th February 1941 it was transported to 52 R.S.U. (Repair and Salvage Unit) at Khartoum and broken up.
