Fury K7282, accident location unknown. Possibly in Yorkshire.
On Saturday, 8th January 1938 this 41 Squadron aeroplane was being ferried toward Catterick aerodrome when bad weather saw the pilot have to make a forced landing. He managed to avoid high tension cables on approach to land in poor visibility and once in the field struck a fence and then ran into a hedge. The location of where the aeroplane was being ferried from is not known, nor is the location of the forced landing and in theory it could be anywhere between the start location and Catterick. Only minor damage must have resulted as the aeroplane was repaired and was damaged at Catterick six weeks later.
On this date I have located a newspaper report that mentions an RAF aeroplane landing near Hailsham which may relate to K7282, more information is required.
Pilot - P/O Geoffrey Charles Matheson RAF (39363).
Geoffrey Matheson's parents were Sir Charles & Lady Olive Matheson, of Henley. S/Ldr Matheson was killed flying 418 Squadron Mosquito HJ773 on 24th August 1943 and has no known grave.
