Whitley K7239 at Finningley aerodrome.

On 5th April 1938 the undercarrige of this 7 Squadron Whitley jammed in retracted position in the air. On return to Finningley aerodrome the pilot landed with it retracted sustaining damage.

Whitley K7239 was built to contract 421118/35 by Armstrong Whitworth Ltd. at Baginton and was taken on charge as new by 7 Squadron on 17th March 1938 at Finningley. As a result of the damage at Finningley on 5th April 1938 Cat.M/FA damage was the damage assessment and it was repaired on site. On 11th January 1940 the Whitley was transferred to 97 Squadron at Abingdon and on 18th April 1940 97 Squadron merged into 10 O.T.U. at Abingdon. On 14th June 1940 it was flown to Airwork Ltd. at Gatwick then on 3rd August 1940 it was taken to Marshall's Ltd. at Cambridge. On 24th September 1940 it was taken on charge by No.9 B.G.S. at Penrhos. On 16th September 1941 it was transferred to No.9 A.G.S. at Llandwrog but on 23rd December 1941 the undercarriage collapsed on landing at Llandwrog. Cat.R/FA damage was the damage assessment and it was taken to Airwork Ltd at Gatwick on 5th January 1942 for a repair in works. On 23rd April 1942 it was flown to 23 M.U. at Aldergrove where it was stored. It was eventually struck off charge on 22nd November 1943.
