Hawker Hind K5525 near Selby.

On 2nd December 1938 the pilot of this 83 Squadron aircraft became lost while on a flight. he attempted to force land in a field in the Selby area but the aircraft tipped up onto it's nose and was slightly damaged. I do not know where in the Selby area this landing was made. 83 Squadron were in the process of replacing their Hawker Hinds for Hampdens at the time and it may have been on its way out of the squadron at the time of this incident.

Pilot - (A)P/O William Richmond Hole RAF (70859).

William Hole was killed on 24th April 1942 while serving with 203 Squadron in North Africa. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Alamein Memorial.
Hawker Hind K5525 was built to contract 404654/35 by the Hawker Aircraft Co. Ltd. and was delivered to No.2 A.S.U. at Cardington on 19th June 1936. In the published Air Britain history it states that the aircraft was taken on charge by 83 Squadron at Turnhouse on 3rd July 1936 but 83 Squadron did not reform until 4th August 1936 and only started receiving aircraft in September 1936. The earlier date may have been the allocation date. On 14th March 1938 83 Squadron moved to Scampton. As a result of this damage sustained on 2nd December 1938 repairable Cat.R/FA damage was the initial assessment but it appears to have sat in the field over Christmas as it was not removed to Church Fenton until 13th January 1939. Repairs do not seem to have been made and on 28th March 1939 it was allocated to be a ground instructional airframe 1371M for use at Hednesford but this was not taken up. Nothing more of the aircraft is known so it was probably scrapped.
