Unidentified aeroplane near Wombwell.
Information regarding this incident is purely taken from newspaper accounts. During the afternoon of Wednesday, 6th April 1938 an aeroplane was flying in the Wombwell area when it made a forced landing in a field to the south of the village with no damage. The aeroplane had flown very close to a school at Wombwell and with it being close to the end of the school day a large number of children made their way through the fields to the aeroplane. It landed on landed owned by Mr Arthur Wood and would appear to have been in the area shown on maps of the era as Chapel Fields. The pilot was lost and asked for directions to reach Doncaster. Fifteen minutes after landing it took off again, passed over Lundhill and made off toward Doncaster. Whether this was a civilian or an RAF aeroplane is not stated in the newspapers.
