"Audax K5128?" at Norton aerodrome (Coal Aston), Sheffield.

This incident features in newspapers, from which the information has been drawn. During the night of Monday, 19th December 1938 a snowstorm effected everything across most of England. The crew of a large RAF bomber aeroplane became lost in the air during the snow storm, they managed to locate the old Norton (Coal Aston) aerodrome and attempted a landing. Unfortunately the aeroplane ran through some form of rut on the landing area causing the aeroplane to overturn. There was either a crew of two or of three (newspaper reports that mention the incident differ). All on board escaped serious injury.

The aircraft appears to have been Audax K5128 which was damaged on this date though why it was so far north when it was based at Ternhill with No.10 Flying Training School. It had just been transferred from 11 FTS to 10 FTS and it possible that this was the transit flight. It cannot have been carrying three crew though.

Pilot - Name unknown.

Two passengers? - Names unknown.

Audax K5128 was built to contract 389427/35 by A.V.Roe and Co. Ltd. at Chadderton and was taken on charge as new by 11 F.T.S. at Wittering on 4th March 1936. On 30th December 1937 it sustained repairable Cat.M/FA when it overshot a forced landing whilst lost and tipped on it's nose. It was probably repaired on site. On 7th December 1938 it was transferred to No.10 F.T.S. at Ternhill and sustained damage days later on 19th December 1938 while force landing. Cat.R/FA damage was the assessment and the aircraft was initially recovered to Finningley aerodrome. Why it then sat at Finningley until 15th June 1939 when it was taken by road to Rollason’s Ltd. at Croydon is unclear. It was repaired at Rollason's and on 18th November 1939 it was flown to 24 M.U. at Ternhill. On 10th September 1940 it was taken to 52 M.U. (Packing Depot) at Pengam Moors, Cardiff which then saw it shipped to Air Depot, Dringh Road, India. It arrived on 28th October 1940 and was taken on charge by No.1 S.F.T.S.(I.) at Ambara. It was later transferred to 146 Squadron at Dinjan. On 9th January 1942 it undershot a landing at Dinjan, Assam and hit a tree. Cat.E/FA damage was the damage assessment and it was struck off charge on 10th April 1942.
