Unidentified aeroplane near Wath upon Dearne.

The information shown on this webpage is drawn from local newspaper reports that mentioned the incident. During the afternoon of Monday, 13th June 1938 an RAF bomber aeroplane circled the Wath upon Dearne, Wombwell and Wentworth area for some time and then made a forced landing in a field near Brampton, just west of Wath upon Dearne. Unfortunately the field wasn't long enough and in turning to avoid running into a clump of trees the aeroplane tipped to one side. The outer half of the lower wing struck the ground which bent it upward. The location given in the newspaper is near Lion Lodge, Brampton. With the aeroplane damaged, the pilot walked to Wath upon Dearne police station and stated he was from Wiltshire. Whether he was from Wiltshire or the squadron or flying unit he was serving with was based in Wiltshire is not yet clear. The crash site has probably been overbuilt with housing in more recent years. The photograph shown above was taken from the "Penistone, Stocksbridge and Hoyland Express" newspaper.
