Hawker Fury K8218 near Burton Fleming.

During the 1930s Catfoss aerodrome was mainly used as an armament training camp with squadrons taking turns to visit the area for a period of weeks at a time. Newspaper reports for this subsequent incident on Tuesday, 12th January 1937 state that an aeroplane based at Catfoss aerodrome was flying in the Bridlington area when weather effected flying. In the normal training routines Catfoss aeroplanes did not normally fly too far in land as their training involved gunnery and bombing exercises off the coast. While the aeroplane type is not stated in the newspaper reports that mention the incident they do state the unit it was with had been stationed at Catfoss for six weeks and that it was a "bomber" type. Owing to thick fog and then running out of fuel the crew forced landed in a ploughed field near Burton Fleming, just off the Hunmanby road. As it came in to land the undercarriage caught a wire fence between two fields, this caused the aeroplane to overturn, break the propeller and damage the tail. With the aeroplane then being missing when it failed to return to Catfoss a large search by aeroplanes, RAF road tenders and police was carried out and it was eventually located. Neither men in the areoplane were injured.

The aeroplane appears to have been Hawker Fury K8218, which was on the books of No.9 Flying Training School, based at Thornaby. If correct then this unit may have been at Catfoss for an armament training camp. It would fit for it flying from Catfoss back to Thornaby when the incident occurred.
