Hawker Hart K5814 at Thornaby aerodrome.

On 31st March 1937 this No.9 Flying Training School aircraft taxied into Hart K5808 at Thornaby airfield damaging both aircraft slightly. The pilot was almost certainly one of the unit's instructors.

Edward Womphrey attended the Flying Instructors' Course at the Central Flying School between 13th January and 28th March 1936 and gained his Cat.B certificate. He was granted a commission to the rank of P/O on probation on 1st April 1940. He received promotions to F/O (war subs) on 1st April 1941 and F/Lt (war subs) on 1st April 1942. He was awarded the AFC for service as an instructor at 9 EFTS, Gazetted on 31st March 1942 and survived the War.
Hart K5814 was built to contract 410420/35 by Vickers Ltd at Weybridge and was delivered to 9 FTS on 18th March 1936. It sustained Cat.R damage in the incident at Thornaby on 10th October 1936 and was later repaired and returned to service. It suffered this second accident at Thornaby, Cat.R/FA again, on 31st March 1937. Following this repair it returned to service only to suffer another Cat.R/FA accident on 28th August 1940. Again it was repaired and then transferred to 1 FTS on 11th April 1941. Here it suffered another Cat.R/FA on 13th April 1941 after which it was delivered to Marshall's at Cambridge for repair on 18th April 1941. After repair it was sent to Odiham for dismantling and packing on 5th July 1941 where it was sent to the South African Air Force as "483" for 2 FTS on 12th August 1941, after which there is no further RAF record.
