Miles M.2 Hawk G-ACYA near Hebden Bridge.
The pilot of this aeroplane took off from Manchester on the evening of Wednesday, 21st July 1937, where the aeroplane was based. The purpose of the flight is not known. While it was being flown over the Pennine Hills and at around 18.00hrs it was seen to fly over the Calder Valley between Hebden Bridge and Heptonstall. It then headed up Crimsworth Dene. While over Lumb Falls the engine began to fail. The aeroplane was seen to circle a few times and the pilot then landed in a field near Grain Water Bridge, next to what was known as the Old Haworth Road. Fortunately the landing was very successful and no further damage to the aeroplane occurred. The following day the aeroplane was dismantled and transported back to Manchester where it was to be rebuilt. The aeroplane was almost certainly Miles M.2 Hawk G-ACYA that was owned by the named pilot at the time, he based the aeroplane at Barton, Manchester.
Pilot - Mr Herbert Jacob Hardy.
Herbert Hardy and his wife Clara lived in West Didsbury, Manchester. If I have got the correct marriage registration then Herbert Hardy married Clara Hollinrake in Todmorden in 1930.
