Unidentified Audax at Norton (Coal Aston) aerodrome, Sheffield.

Newspaper reports that mention this incident state that the aeroplane was based at Ternhill, Shrewsbury which almost certainly means it was with No.10 Flying Training School who were based there. During the morning of Wednesday, 2nd June 1937 it was flown on a height test, the pilot took off and would eventually climb to 20,000 feet which in itself must have been a challenge in a open cockpit aeroplane. When he eventually descended the pilot was lost. He eventually spotted a field in the area south of Sheffield that he believed would be suitable to land on so force landed without damage, at that time he was not aware where he was or that he had landed on the old aerodrome at Norton (Coal Aston). A police motorcyclist had seen him land and met him. Flying regulations at that time prevented RAF pilots from taking off again without first informing the RAF. The aeroplane was guarded while he was taken to Woodseats police station where he contacted Finningley aerodrome. Finningley later sent an aeroplane to Sheffield and escorted this pilot to Finningley.
