Hawker Audax K7319 at Thornaby aerodrome.

On 30th November 1936 this No.9 Flying Training School aeroplane overturned on landing at Thornaby airfield in a strong wind. The aeroplane was later repaired on site. The pilot had already suffered one flying accident at Thornaby on 2nd October 1936 in Audax K5249.

It is possible that the pilot was one Ernest Lyall RAF (580214) who was to be killed on 26th January 1942 serving with 36 Squadron. He is commemorated on the Singapore Memorial. He was twenty seven years old.
Audax K7319 was built to contract 437223/35 by A.V. Roe and Co. Ltd. at Chadderton and was taken on charge by No.9 F.T.S. on 21st July 1936 who were based at Thornaby at the time. On 30th November 1936 it overturned at Thornaby while landing in a strong wind. Cat.M/FA damage was the damage assessment and it was repaired on site. On 9th July 1937 the aeroplane moved with the unit to Hullavington. As a result of a landing accident at Catfoss on 5th October 1937 Cat.M/FA damage was the damage assessment and it was repaired on site. Once repaired it was returned to 9 F.T.S. charge. On 1st May 1940 the undercarriage collapsed in a heavy landing at Newton Down Landing Ground, Cat.W/FA damage was the damage assessment and it was struck off charge on 31st May 1940.
