On 10th October 1936 this No.9 Flying Training School aircraft struck Hart K5814 which was parked at Thornaby aerodrome and both aircraft were damaged. There were a number of collisions at Thornaby in 1936/37 involving pilot's who were instructors. The pilot was one of 9 F.T.S.'s flying instructors at the time, he would later rise to the higher ranks of the RAF.
Pilot - Sgt David Albert Upton RAF (359059).
David Upton undertook a Flying Instructor Course at the Central Flying School between 13th January and 28th March 1936 gaining a Class B certificate and was later posted to 9 FTS as an instructor. He undertook a further examination in early 1937 and was re-certified as a Class A2 instructor. His postings pre-ww2 are not yet known. He received a commission to P/O on probation on 19th August 1940 (with seniority of 12th July 1940) in the Administrative and Special Duties Branch and was promoted to F/O on probation (war subs) on 1st March 1941 and confirmed as F/O on 9th August 1941, rising to F/Lt (temp) on 1st June 1942, F/Lt (War Subs) on 2nd July 1942. His postings during the War are not known apart from that he was posted to 303 Squadron on 10th August 1940 as Adjutant until 7th January 1941 when he was posted to Coltishall. Post-War he was appointed to permanent commission to the rank of S/Ldr (perm) on 1st January 1947 (seniority to 1st September 1945) and he transferred to the Secretarial Branch on this appointment. On 1st July 1948 he was promoted to W/Co. He was awarded the OBE in the King's Birthday Honours list in June 1950. He retired from the RAF on 23rd September 1957.
