Unidentified aeroplane at Bramham.

On Wednesday, 2nd September 1936 this aeroplane was being flown north towards the aerodrome site at Newton House, Leeming when a combination of poor visibility and the on setting dusk saw the pilot make a forced landing at Bramham crossroads. Unfortunately the aeroplan ran through a hedge which damaged the propeller and undercarriage. The pilot was probably using the easy navigation route of following the Great North Road north which ran at the side of the destination aerodrome. A passing motorist stopped and took both the pilot and passenger to Leeming. The pilot was a well regarded racehorse trainer from Middleham and the day of this incident his horse "Obliterette" ran in the 2 o'clock at Derby. This seems to be the likely place this aeroplane had set out from after the race meeting was concluded. Bramham crossroads have long since been replaced with the A1 / A64 interchange to the west side of the farm. The farm still exists but is abandoned.

Pilot - Mr Gerald Robert Armstrong. Of Ashgill, Midddleham, Yorkshire.

Passenger - Name unknown.

The Yorkshire Aviation Services operated from Newton House, Leeming and were probably the aeroplane's owners. I would welcome information that identifies it.
