Airspeed Envoy G-ADBZ "Swaledale" near Dishforth.

Information regarding this incident is limited. On Friday, 17th May 1935 an unseasonally cold spell of weather effected northern England and this included a snowstorm. During this period the North Eastern Airlines (of Heston) operated a number of passenger carrying flights between London and Leeds, Newcastle and Edinburgh. During the storm this aeroplane was flying with just a pilot across Yorkshire but to and from where is not yet known. As it approached the Ripon area the aeroplane suffered a problem with an engine and this saw the pilot make a forced landing in a field on Hutton Moor, between Ripon and Dishforth and on land owned by Mr T. Spilman. The aeroplane was badly damaged. The pilot was injured, he was initially taken to Ripon and Distict Hospital but the following day an aeroplane arrived to transport him back to Heston.

Pilot - Mr Vashon James Wheeler MC and Bar. Injured.

Vashon Wheeler was awarded the Military Cross and Bar for service in the First World War. He later lied about his age and was able to fly in the Second World War with Coastal, Fighter and Bomber Commands, being awarded the DFC and Bar. He was killed on 23rd March 1944 serving with 207 Squadron when Lancaster ME666 crashed in Germany and is buried at Durnbach Cemetery.
