Between 1st and 9th September 1934 a national glider "derby" meeting was held at Sutton Bank and was arranged by the British Gliding Association. Some fifty pilots had agreed to take part in contests for soaring, distance, altitude, duration and other flying with between three and four thousand spectators travelling to Sutton Bank to watch by the second day. Over the course of the week a number of gliders were damaged. On Tuesday, 4th September 1934 some very successful glider flights were made with lift provided by a storm front; Buxton in the London Club's Scud reached North Ormesby and Dewsbery in the Blue Wren reached Whitby. At 18.21hrs Eric Collins took off in his Rhonadler from Sutton Bank, circled for some time around the Sutton Bank area until the storm front provided excellent lift, Collins flew in company with Dewsbery in his Blue Wren for some twenty minutes before the pair went their own ways. Eventually Collins ran into some hail and headed south. At around 20.20hrs the pilot attempted to land near Pickering. He selected a large field that had had the standing wheat cut but left in lines of stooks. The glider landed down an avenue of the standing stooks but when the line turned a corner the glider struck the stooks and the tail received minor damage. The pilot was able to repair the glider himself and it was flown again on 8th September 1934.
