Avro 504 / release of parachutist near Plompton.

On 27th August 1933 a British Hospitals Air Pageant was being held at Plompton, south of Harrogate. During the display an Avro 504 aircraft carried up an experienced parachutist who jumped from the aircraft over the display field at around 1,200 feet above the ground. The parachute functioned correctly but because of a strong gusty wind the parachutist believed that he would drift well away from the landing area of the display field. At around 500 feet he was seen to deliberately collapse his parachute by pulling on the lines which would speed up the descent and make the landing on the field more likely. Unfortunately he did not release his grasp of the parachute lines so it did not re-open properly. He fell to the ground near Plompton and was killed.

Parachutist - Mr Alfred Henry Crawshey Evans, aged 29. Burial location unknown.
