Sidestrand J9770 at Catfoss aerodrome.

101 Squadron undertook their annual armarment practice camp at Catfoss aerodrome between 24th June to 30th July 1932 before returning to their home aerodrome at Andover. On 1st July 1932 a visiting Fairey III S1492 of 450 Flight, Fleet Air Arm was taxying when it collided with a parked 101 Squadron Sidestrand J9770 at Catfoss. The Sidestrand appears to have been empty, it was repaired but was later converted into an Overstrand.

Sidestrand J9770 was built to contract 921961/29 by Boulton & Paul Ltd. at Bilbrook, Norfolk and was taken on charge as new by 101 Squadron at Andover where it carried the code "101-C", but the date it arrived at 101 Squadron is not known. As a result of the damage sustained at Catfoss on 1st July 1932 Cat.M/FA would have been the damage assessment and it was repaired. The history of this aeroplane is very vague at this point. It was converted to an Overstrand at some stage and in May 1935 it was taken on charge by the A&AEE at Martlesham Heath for the Flight Refuelling Flight. During November 1935 it was flown to Boulton & Paul to be re-engined and was then returned to Farnborough by the end of the month. On 3rd February 1938 it was transferred to RNAS Ford. On 15th June 1938 it was returned to the R.A.E.. The last known reference to the aeroplane was during September 1938 and after this date nothing further is known of its history.
