Fairey Flycatcher N9879 near Kirby Underdale.
Information regarding this incident is sparse and I have no contemporary information to refer to. Perhaps strangely I have not found a newspaper report for the incident which is rare for the era, maybe suggesting the date given is not correct.
Suggested to have been on 1st March 1927 this 405 Flight, Fleet Air Arm aeroplane (attached to HMS Furious) was flying across Yorkshire in fog when it struck trees and then crashed into a field at Kirby Underdale. Other Fleet Air Arm Flycatchers crashed in Yorkshire around this time and they were heading between Donibristle (where they were based) and Gosport (where training exercises where carried out). It is possible the pilot of N9879 was doing the same.
Pilot - Lt Robert Clement Giles. Royal Marines.
Robert Giles served with 405 Flight from 1st September 1926 to 1st September 1927 when he went to 404 Flight (HMS Courageous). By the end of 1941 he was in the rank of Major and being held in PoW captivity by the Japaneese.
