Sopwith Camel E7149 near Towton.
On 10th December 1918 this aircraft was being flown from South Carlton aerodrome, near Lincoln to Bramham Moor aerodrome, near Tadcaster. As the aircraft approached Tadcaster the pilot became lost in thick fog, before the pilot could successfully land the aircraft flew into a tree near Towton at 15.20hrs and crashed. The crash was heard by a Miss Raper, of Towton, who went to the site and found the crashed aircraft. Unfortunately the pilot was trapped under the wreckage and she with two German prisoners of war were working near by helped to free him though he had already died. The aircraft and pilot was flying as part of 46 Training Depot Station.
