S.E.5a E5842 at Huttons Ambo.
During the afternoon of Saturday, 8th February 1919 this aeroplane was being flown on a training flight as part of a course with No.21 Training Depot Station at Driffield and was in the company with at least one other. While over the Malton area this aeroplane ran out of fuel. The pilot attempted to make a gliding forced landing and but, after the aeroplane had lost flying speed the pilot turned into the wind prior to landing. Unfortunately the aeroplane stalled and spun into the ground near what was described as "the sand pits" at Huttons Ambo. Another pilot flying with this pilot landed to assist. The injured pilot was taken to Malton Cottage Hospital and treated for head and arm injuries. Looking for the sand pits on old mapping there were two marked, both between High Hutton and Crambeck.
