On 7th December 1918 this aircraft was gliding over Redcar aerodrome as part of a training flight when he noticed another aircraft directly above him. In trying to avoid a collision he applied full left rudder but this caused the aircraft to loose speed, stall and then spin. With no height to recover the aircraft it dived into the ground. He was seriously injured and admitted to the Red Barn Hospital at Redcar (a stately home used during WW1). The aircraft was part of No.63 Training Squadron.
