Parachuting accident at Sherburn in Elmet aerodrome.

On Monday, 3rd October 1927 the Yorkshire Aeroplane Club organised their second air pageant at the aerodrome at Sherburn in Elmet where they operated. Various flying displays were given by both civilians and also the RAF. As part of the pageant a civilian aeroplane was flown over the aerodrome at around 500 feet above the ground and while over the pageant a parachutist jumped as part of a display but all did not to plan. The parachutist initially somersaulted three or four times before the parachute partially opened. It then dropped some considerable height before it opened properly but was then blown in the wind that was present. When the parachutist landed the wind blew the parachute and she was dragged some three hundred yards before it eventually stopped and she had sustained minor injuries.

This incident is briefly covered in newspapers of the era but does not fully identify her as part of this incident being reported. Nor does it state the aeroplane that was used. She was a reasonably well known parachutist of her era, she displayed at various pageants and galas between 1926 and 1928 from ballooons or with an Avro (Avro 504?) being the aeroplane used to fly her where this was reported on. She mainly went under a stage-name of "Miss June" but was occasionally named in newspapers under her real name.

Parachutist - "Miss June" / June Spencer. Injured.

Pilot of aeroplane - Name unknown.
