Unidentified Bristol fighter near Carlton.

During the afternoon of Saturday, 31st May 1919 this aeroplane was being flown from Tadcaster to London when the pilot had to make a forced landing in field near Carlton, Selby at around 15.30hrs. Unfortunately the aeroplane overshot the selected field, which was boggy, ran through a fence and came to rest in a dyke at right angles to the direction of the landing. Both pilot and passenger appear to have escaped injury. The VIP passenger was driven to Temple Hirst railway station and continued his journey by train. He had been in Yorkshire to open the Aircraft Exhibition at Roundhay Park, Leeds earlier that day and had flown up from London the previous day.

Pilot - Brigadier-General Arthur Vyell Vyvyan CB DSO.

Passenger - Charles Vane-Tempest-Stewart, 7th Marquess of Londonderry (Lord Londonderry).
